Y3 - Mrs McGhee 2025 - 2026
Mrs McGhee
Welcome
My name is Mrs McGhee and I teach Year 3 along with Miss Gillman and Mrs Clare, who supports our class. I have been a member of the teaching staff at Northway since 2001.As well as teaching Y3 I am also the deputy head teacher and the lead teacher for mental health. Northway has always been a special place and I am priviledged to be part of such an amazing team. I believe that our children are the best there is and I am so lucky to be able to work with them. This year we have lots of exciting topics coming up and I look forward to keeping you updated on our instagram feed.
PE
This half term, PE lessons will usually take place on a Friday but please make sure your PE kit is in school at the beginning of every half term and stays in school.
All pieces of clothing, including school uniform and shoes must be named. Please ensure earrings are removed or covered with plasters on the P.E. day, staff are not permitted to do this for the children.
Food and drink
Every child should have a clear, reusable, named water bottle that they can access at any time during the day. This bottle should be in addition to a lunch time drink, if they are on packed lunches.
Your child may bring a nut free healthy snack for morning play. Please ensure that the snack is in their book bag so that they do not have to find it in their lunch bags.
Healthy snack
- Fruit
- Bread or toast.
We have children with anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that is caused by a severe allergic reaction to nuts. We ask you to help us protect these children by sending snacks for your child that do not contain nuts. Thank you for your cooperation with this; it is very much appreciated by the families of the children.
Reading
At the start of Y3, the children will continue to read their coloured book banded books - just like in the infants. Alongside this they will have a library book to share with an adult at home. This may be above their reading level and is designed to help broaden children's vocabulary and exposure to different types of books.
As we move through the autumn term, the children will move over to the junior reading scheme called Accelerated Reader. When this happens, we will let you know and hold a workshop in school to explain the new system.
Please continue to listen to your child read at least three times per week and sign their diary. This earns them raffle tickets! School staff will not write in their diary as we keep reading records in school to record their progress.
Accelerated Reader
Please read with your child, regardless of their ability, at least twice per week and sign their home-reading record. Your child will need their reading book each day as we have Accelerated Reading sessions everyday.
To quiz on a school reading book, use our school’s AR site:
https://Ukhosted110.renlearn.co.uk/2243135
Children can also check if a book they have read from home has a quiz attached to it using the following website:
https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/default.aspx
Spellings
This half-term your child will not be bringing a spelling list home to learn. We will continue to work on the Year 3 and 4 common exception words in class but they will not be tested on them weekly. A copy of the National Curriculum words can be found in the 'Downloads' section, below. Please encourage your child to complete some weekly spelling practise by accessing Doodle Spell.
Homework
At the moment, children need to read three times per week and have their reading record signed and complete sessions on Times Table Rockstars to practise their tables. Please focus on 3x, 4x, 6x, 8x.
Online Learning
Inside your child's home reading diary is the username and password for them to access the resources below. These are useful sites for completing maths and English activities.
